About our service
Ashgrove's non-surgical aesthetic services includes medical injection treatments for axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive under-arm sweating), cosmetic facial injections to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines, dermal fillers to reduce lines and increase lost volume, and also cosmetic 'skin peels' to refine and improve the condition of facial skin.
All consultations and treatments are provided exclusively by three of our GP partners who all have established practice in minor surgery, supplemented by an accredited qualification in non-surgical cosmetic & aesthetic procedures.
Consultations with our GPs are entirely free of charge. If after consultation with the GP you wish to proceed with a treatment this will be done during the same appointment. The price of treatment includes any required aftercare.
At Ashgrove Surgery we have a large, dedicated operating theatre where we perform all our procedures. Our operating theatre is thoroughly maintained and is regularly inspected to ensure it continues to meet all the required standards.
Our Aesthetics Team
Three of our GP partners provide private one-to-one consultations and are fully qualified to provide a range of non-surgical aesthetic and cosmetic medical treatments. They are GMC registered and continue to work as NHS General Practitioners full time. All three GPs have received Harley Street training and are fully certified in the use of dermal fillers and Botulinum Toxin for cosmetic procedures.
Dr Paul Colquhoun qualified from King's College Hospital School of Medicine with an MB BS degree in 1992. He initially trained for a surgical career, obtaining the FRCS (Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons) qualification in 1997 and specialising in orthopaedic surgery for two years as a Specialist Registrar. In 2000 he decided to change career to General Practice and became a Partner at Ashgrove Surgery in 2002. He holds the MRCGP (Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners) and the DRCOG (Diploma of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists) qualifications. He is the lead partner in minor surgery and has a special interest in musculoskeletal medicine.
He maintains an interest in surgical skills and dermatology, performs regular vasectomy procedures at Ashgrove Surgery and is also an accredited trainer for vasectomy. He is keen to provide aesthetic treatments, backed up with more than 20 years of medical and surgical experience. The facilities in our surgery also provide a clean and safe environment for these procedures to be done.
Dr Karen Jones is currently senior partner at the Ashgrove Surgery. She qualified with her MB BCh medical degree from Cardiff university in 1988 and has also holds the MRCGP andDCH (Diploma in Child Health) qualifications. She has been in partnership in the practice from 1992. Dr Jones acts as the Medical Officer to the University of South Wales and in addition works to provide Occupational Health Services to organisations such as transport companies, local councils, utility providers and others holding a Diploma in Occupational Medicine.
Her broad experience both within the NHS and the private sector has led her to aim to provide the most comprehensive range of services to patients that we can offer, in a safe, regulated environment. Increasingly patients are making well informed choices about their health and wellbeing and she believes doctors are well placed to advise and offer suitable treatments that are not available on the NHS to those who want such treatments.
Providing available treatments such as Botox® and dermal fillers within medical practice by experienced qualified doctors gives patients more choice about treatments that are increasingly available and popular.
Dr Rebecca Rowlands graduated in 2002 from University of Wales College of Medicine with an MB BCh degree. She gained her MRCGP qualification with Merit and also holds the DRCOGqualification. Dr Rowlands joined Ashgrove Surgery in 2006 and became a partner in 2010. She has two small children and has been carrying out minor surgery for the last
four years and enjoys being able to use and show patients our operating theatre here in the surgery as it is unusual that a GP practice has such a good facility. Many patients talk to her about cosmetic surgery and want to know where the best place to go would be. This got her interested in training and learning more about Botox® and cosmetic fillers.
Dr Rowlands is particularly interested in using Botox® for medical problems such as under arm sweating (hyperhidrosis). Many patients, in particular men, come in complaining of excess sweating having to frequently change shirts/clothing because of this. Often patients are embarrassed about this problem and there are not many NHS treatments available.
Botox® is a safe, fantastic treatment for this and we are offering it here in the surgery for men and women and we look forward to providing this service to our established patients and new clients.
Which products will be used for my treatment?
We use Xeomin® botulinum toxin for hyperhidrosis treatments and for facial lines. We use the Restylane® range of dermal fillers.
What is Restylane® ?
Over time, the quality of your skin changes – collagen and elastic fibres disintegrate, and the spread and function of the body's own hyaluronic acid changes, making your skin drier, rougher and less elastic. While many beauty products and treatments pamper your skin on the surface to treat these very symptoms, Restylane® skinboosters restore from within. They create luminous skin in a natural way by gently and naturally smoothing the skin from the inside. By adding hyaluronic acid through injections under the skin surface, Restylane skinboosters restore the hydro balance and improve the structure, firmness and elasticity of the skin, giving it new energy.
Is Restylane® safe?
Restylane® skinboosters, like all other Restylane products, are based on stabilized hyaluronic acid of non-animal origin. This patented technology is called NASHA™ and it is one of the world's most effective and advanced beauty treatment technologies. With 15 years of research and 11 million treatments worldwide since 1996, Restylane products have well-documented safety and efficacy. And above all, give you natural results that you can see and feel for yourself.
A Restylane® skinbooster treatment is more about care than correction, and the results are visible without changing the shape of your face. Clinical studies demonstrate that Restylane® skinboosters significantly increase skin elasticity and improve skin structure. Thinner, fragile skin also becomes thicker and firmer to better withstand the wear and tear of everyday life.
Restylane® skinboosters are not surgical and they are not toxins. They are a natural beauty method to restore and maintain your skin's quality and lustre.

What is Xeomin?
Xeomin's medical name is Incobotulinum Toxin A. Xeomin is one of several types of Botulinum toxin, other brands you may have heard of are Botox® or Dysport®.
Why Xeomin® instead of other products?
We use Xeomin® rather than Botox® because we believe it is superior. Xeomin® contains is a purified form of Botulinum toxin with no additives. This means that the body's immune system is much less likely to react to the product and this gives a longer lasting treatment and prevents the production of antibodies that may reduce the effectiveness of future treatments.
Are you embarrassed by under-arm sweating? Have you got a special occasion coming up soon and want to avoid sweat marks on your clothes? Off on holiday and and want to keep your top dry in the heat?
At Ashgrove Surgery we can provide a safe and effective medical treatment for excessive under-arm sweating. Known medically as hyperhydrosis, this condition can affect both men and women alike and can often be a source of embarrassment.
What treatment is available?
We provide a non-surgical treatment which involves injection of Botulinum toxin ("Xeomin®") into the skin in the axillae ("arm-pits"). This involves a series of injections (typically around 15) for each armpit - both sides will be treated in the same appointment.
How does Botox® work for sweating?
Botulinum toxin "Xeomin®" blocks the chemical messenger sent from the nerves to the sweat glands. Without this chemical messenger the sweat glands cannot produce sweat.
How quickly does the treatment work?
The effect of the treatment will be immediately noticeable.
How long does the treatment last?
This treatment typically lasts for 2-8 months, after which the treatment can be repeated if you wish.
We offer flexible appointments at the surgery. These include early mornings, lunchtimes and evening appointments.
